Natural Deodorant Ingredients, Explained: What's Actually in No No Funk

TL;DR: No No Funk Natural Deodorant runs on nine named ingredients, not a "proprietary blend." Magnesium hydroxide neutralizes odor without baking soda, zinc ricinoleate traps odor molecules, arrowroot powder and kaolin absorb moisture, and a shea-cocoa-candelilla balm holds it together in a formula that glides on rather than drags. Here's what each ingredient actually does.

Flip over most natural deodorants and the ingredient list reads like a magic trick: "odor-fighting minerals," "a plant-derived complex," "the good stuff." Zero specifics. We built No No Funk Natural Deodorant the other way. Nine ingredients. Every one named. Every one earning its place in the jar. Here's the full breakdown.

The two ingredients actually fighting odor

Magnesium hydroxide is the workhorse. It neutralizes odor at the source — gently, and without a single grain of baking soda. That matters, because baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is alkaline, sitting around pH 8–9, while skin's natural pH is mildly acidic, closer to 5.5. Dermatology sources note that shifting skin pH out of its normal range is linked to irritation, redness and dryness (Cleveland Clinic). Magnesium hydroxide does the odor-neutralizing job without that pH swing.

Zinc ricinoleate works alongside it, trapping odor molecules so they don't make it into the air around you. It isn't a fragrance covering up smell — it's binding the molecules that cause it.

The moisture absorbers

Arrowroot powder and kaolin (a fine, gentle clay) absorb underarm moisture through the day. Arrowroot is a recognized deodorant ingredient for exactly this job — it's one of the ingredients dermatologists point to for helping deodorants "absorb sweat and feel smooth" against skin (American Academy of Dermatology). Worth repeating: absorbing moisture is different from stopping sweat. No No Funk is a deodorant, not an antiperspirant, and it was never built to plug your sweat glands — only to handle what happens after you sweat.

The balm base — why it glides instead of dragging

Shea butter, cocoa seed butter and candelilla wax make up the balm base that gives No No Funk its texture — smooth going on, not gritty or draggy. Caprylic/capric triglyceride is a light emollient that keeps the balm from feeling heavy, and tocopherol (vitamin E) rounds it out by conditioning skin as it sits.

FAQ

Is No No Funk an antiperspirant? No — it's a deodorant. It neutralizes and traps odor; it doesn't stop or reduce sweat. Only aluminum-based ingredients do that, and No No Funk doesn't contain any (American Academy of Dermatology).

Why baking-soda-free? Baking soda is alkaline and can push skin's naturally mildly-acidic pH out of balance, which is linked to irritation for some people (Cleveland Clinic). Magnesium hydroxide does the odor-neutralizing work without it.

What scents are available? Unscented now. Lavender Rose and Vanilla Coconut are on the way in about a month.
