Sandal Season Foot Prep: A Weekly Routine That Works

Tough Love dual-sided pumice stone foot file with bamboo handle by Handmade Heroes

The weekly routine

Pick one day a week and make it foot-file day. The order matters more than the amount of time you spend on it:

  • Soak first. In the shower or a basin of warm water, five to ten minutes, until skin softens.
  • File on the fine side. Gentle circular or sideways strokes over heels and rough spots. Switch to the coarse side only where callus has really settled in, then finish back on fine to smooth the edges.
  • Rinse feet and file. Both get a rinse — your feet to remove loosened skin, the file so it's ready for next time.
  • Moisturize immediately. While skin is still warm and damp is when a foot cream absorbs best.

Where to focus first

You don't need to file your whole foot every week. Heels carry most of the buildup, followed by the ball of the foot and the outer edge of the big toe — the spots that take the most pressure with every step. Spend most of your time there and do a lighter pass everywhere else, rather than treating the whole foot the same.

Don't skip the moisturizer step

Filing without moisturizing after just dries the fresh skin back out, which undoes most of the benefit. Look for a foot cream with humectant ingredients like urea or ammonium lactate, which dermatologists point to for softening hardened skin over time, and consider sleeping in moisturizing socks afterward so the cream has time to actually sink in instead of rubbing off on the sheets.

Shop the routine

The Tough Love Pumice Stone Foot File is dual-sided — coarse for the thick spots, fine for weekly maintenance — with a bamboo handle that grips even when your hands are wet, which is rather the point of a tool you use in the shower.

FAQ

How far ahead of sandal season should I start? A couple of weekly sessions is usually enough to catch up on months of buildup. After that, once a week keeps it there.

Can I file every day to speed things up? No — filing daily tells your skin to rebuild the callus thicker. Once or twice a week, on damp skin, is the actual routine.

I only have five minutes. What do I do? Soak while you shower normally, do one quick pass on the fine side, then moisturize before bed. Consistency matters more than how long any single session takes.
